HIV stands for the English term "Human
Immunodeficiency Virus" (= human
immunodeficiency virus).
This is the virus that causes AIDS. HIV differs
from most other viruses because it attacks the
immune system. The immune system makes to fight
our body infections. HIV searches and destroys a
group of white blood cells (T cells or CD4
cells), which
body defence system requires to fight in future.
Magnitude of HIV
Globally 3 Crore 33 Lakh people are estimated to be
living with HIV/AIDS (UN-AIDS 2009 update).
India
has the third highest no. of cases after South
Africa and Nigeria.
In
India, as per year 2009, 24 lakh persons are estimated to be living
with HIV, this is lower than the previous
estimates, but there is no room for complacency.
It is a challenging task to halt and reverse the
epidemic and ensure universal access of
services.
Himachal Pradesh has the low HIV prevalence
(0.19%) and the no. of people living with
HIV/AIDS as on 31st December 2010 are
4998.
